We will begin our journey in the canaled city of Amsterdam for one night before boarding the Avalon Expression to take in the splendours of the Rhine River. Wewill explore Holland’s famous windmills and waterworks on our way to Germany, where we see the many charming castles commanding the riverbanks as you sail by. Admire Cologne, the jewel of the Rhine, with it’s awe-inspiring Dom. Tour the ruins of historical Heidelberg Castle and experience the lush landscape of the Black Forest region. Take part in the inviting nightlife in Rüdesheim and encounter multicultural Strasbourg in France. We have selected pick up points for you to meet our tour. We will transfer to Pearson International where we will board our overnight flight for Amsterdam.
Upon arrival at Schipohl Airport we will be met by a local guide for a guided tour of Amsterdam before transferring to our hotel – the NH Amsterdam Centre (or similar). The hotel is centrally located and a short walk from downtown for those wanting to explore Amsterdam on their own.
We enjoy breakfast at the hotel and a leisurely morning in Amsterdam before transferring to our ship this afternoon. Welcome aboard the Avalon Expression. Get used to your new surroundings or you may join an optional tour to Zaanse Schans to see historic windmills and charming Dutch houses. Unpack and get ready to enjoy our leisurely cruise.
After breakfast we’ll explore the iconic waterways of Amsterdam on a guided canal cruise. This afternoon take some free time to explore Amsterdam’s colorful streets and canal houses before setting sail for Cologne in the evening.
We will wake up in Cologne, Germany this morning and disembark for a guided walking tour of this gem of the Rhine. Stroll through Old Town past St. Martin’s Church and spend some time inside Cologne’s Dom, a remarkable Gothic cathedral. The rest of your day is free to explore the dockside cafés and shops before setting sail overnight to Rudesheim.
Today we sail along the most scenic stretch of the Rhine, where castles overlook the river from their hilltop locations. This part of the Middle Rhine Valley is so beautiful that it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We’ll dock in Rudesheim later this afternoon where you’ll have free time. Walk the pedestrian-only Drosselgasse and sample a glass of locally produced wine at one of the restaurants or wine bars. Remain docked overnight.
This morning we take a short cruise to Mainz and disembark for an excursion to Heidelberg. Today you will have several options including a city walk with a visit the Gutenberg Museum, a guided tour to the famous Heidelberg castle towering above the city or take a short hike up to Philosopher’s Way for awe-inspiring views of the city below. Return to your ship for afternoon cruising.
Arrive in Strasbourg, France this morning and disembark for a guided city tour which includes the city’s famed cathedral and La Petite France district. Take some free time this afternoon to further explore this city’s blend of French and German cultures, fabulous churches, medieval covered bridges, beautiful parks and charming architecture. Or opt to visit the regions famous Alsace wine country. Cruise overnight to Breisach.
Arrive during breakfast in Breisach, gateway to the Black Forest on scenic excursion through the area’s renowned mountain landscape, rolling meadows and dense forests or visit the vineyards of Baden – Germany’s largest wine region. Return to Breisach for some free time before our evening departure.
We arrive in Basel this morning and bid farewell to our friends from the ship where we are met by our coach to continue onto Bern for a guided tour and lunch (on your own). This afternoon we travel to the scenic town of Thun, on Lake Thunersee and finally to our hotel in Villars-Sur-Ollon. We enjoy dinner at the hotel this evening. We will stay 3 nights at the Eurotel Victoria Villars.
After breakfast we tour the local area including Lake Geneva, Montreux and Vevey where we visit Chaplin’s World, a museum in the former home of Charlie Chaplin. This afternoon we travel to Lausanne and visit the Olympic Museum and enjoy a tour and tasting in the vineyards of Lavaux. After a full day, we return to our hotel and enjoy dinner.
After breakfast, we travel through the Rhone Valley to Tasch and embark on a train ride up to the Alpine town of Zermatt at the foot of the Matterhorn for free time and lunch (on your own) before reboarding the train and travel back to our hotel where we enjoy our last dinner together as a group.
An early morning check out and transfer to Geneva Airport for our return flight to Toronto. Upon arrival in Toronto, we will be met by our coach for the return to our original pick up points.
